Duties and Responsibilities:

* The Diving Safety Specialist (DSS) assists the Diving Safety Officer (DSO) in the maintenance of a comprehensive system-wide Diving Safety Program.
* Conduct DSP training classes which include, UH Scientific Diver course, emergency response training classes (e.g. CPR/First Aid, Oxygen Administration), SCUBA rescue, Nitrox, and Dive Computer qualification.
* Develop and prepare classroom training materials such as overheads, slides, Powerpoint presentations, etc. Prepare classroom for training sessions and conduct post-session clean-up and recordkeeping.
* Conduct field training sessions which includes trainee supervision, equipment preparation, pre-dive briefing and post-dive reviews.
* Conduct evaluation of new diver candidates’ diving skills and knowledge including pool and open water assessments, written examinations, and practical skills assessment.
* Serve as on-site safety supervisor for UH scientific diving activities, as assigned.
* Conduct preliminary evaluation of dive plan applications, which includes verification of diver status and assessment of compliance with DSP requirements.
* Assist DSO with preparation of annual reports to American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) and UH Diving Control Board (DCB). Assist in preparation for and attend monthly meetings of DCB.
* Assist in development of annual budgets and maintain program cost-effort statistics.
* Coordinate information transfer to other UH Diver Trainers, such as Unit Instructors, Diving Coordinators and Contract Trainers to assure compliance with DSP standards.
* Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

* Possession of a baccalaureate degree in oceanography, biology, or related field which utilizes scientific diving and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for AAUS scientific diving programs; or equivalent education/training or experience.
* Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the operation of AAUS scientific diving programs including training of scientific divers as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
* Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with AAUS scientific diving programs and training of scientific divers.
* Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
* For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
* Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
* Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
* Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
* Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
* Current active National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI) instructor, or current active instructor with nationally recognized diver training agency and completion of crossover within three months of hire.
* Considerable knowledge of the concepts of and the ability to conduct scientific diving training classes, including development of customized training materials, methods and procedures.
* Current active National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI) instructor, or current active instructor with nationally recognized diver training agency and completion of crossover within three months of hire.
* Provide proof of NAUI or DAN Instructor certification for occupational dive emergency response (incl. CPR-Pro, Standard First Aid, Hazardous Marine Life Injuries, and O2 Administration First Aid for Diving Accidents) within three months of hire.
* AAUS Scientific Diver certification from an AAUS member institution.
* Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with members of the University community and individuals and agencies outside the University.
* Considerable knowledge of methods, procedures, hazards and safety precautions associated with scientific diving such as coral reef surveys, sample collection, underwater archaeology, bluewater diving, and light equipment emplacement.
* Current AAUS Individual Member

Desirable Qualifications:

* Certified US DOI Motorboat Operator or NOAA Coxswain certificate, USCG Captain, or equivalent.
* NAUI or DAN Instructor Trainer
* Experience in technical diving methods as applied to scientific diving, such as decompression techniques, mixed gas diving, or closed-circuit rebreathers.
* EMT/DMT or chamber operator certification;
