ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The St. Thomas East End Reserves (STEER) Implementation Specialist develops, manages and advances conservation programs for the STEER based on the Management Plan for the area. This is a term-limited (1.5 year) position. Tracks progress on the Management Plan activities and provides technical leadership and support to USVI’s Department of Planning and Natural Resources and partners involved in STEER management. May manage conservation data, participate in yearly MPA planning, develop project packages, respond to stakeholder inquiries and maintain manual project records. May include collecting, assembling and analyzing various types of data, in the field or through document surveys, producing maps using GIS software and assisting in the production of reports. This may include one or more of the following functions:
• Implements the STEER Management Plan and conservation strategies
• Plans and directs marine reserve management programs and stewardship as it relates to the STEER area.
• Addresses critical threats to natural systems and individual species
• Fosters cross-site learning among conservation community
• Supplies ecoregional planning teams with information for site portfolios
• Implements a variety of strategies to secure public and private support for STEER conservation priorities.
• Coordinates community support and involvement
• Furthers the Conservancy’s strategic goals through site level planning, restoration and conservation activities.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s degree and 3 years experience in natural resource management or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience communicating with the public and/or media both in writing and verbally.
• Experience using common software applications such as Word, Excel, Web browsers, etc.
• Experience performing physical work.
• Experience coordinating multiple projects and managing timeframes.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
• Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years experience in natural resource management or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Ability and willingness to apply science to decision-making and guide activities
• Ability to communicate and work closely with scientists
• Working with media and influential officials, especially governmental, to improve Conservancy programs’ outcomes
• Knowledge of ecological marine management and coastal watershed management principles
• Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management and natural resource preservation
• Experience in running stakeholder meetings, training, leading focus groups, committee meetings and curriculum design.
• Demonstrated experience communicating effectively with the public and/or media
• Completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s)
• Managing time and diverse activities under deadlines while delivering quality results
• Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers).
• Excellent communication skills via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages
• Experience utilizing GIS software and data to create maps an asset.
• Knowledge of the U.S. Virgin Islands and/or Caribbean preferred, with knowledge of DPNR and other management agencies, the STEER area, businesses within STEER, boating and boating issues, tourism in the USVI an advantage.
• Experience in MPA management biophysical and socio-economic monitoring. Marine field survey experience an asset. Coral reef field survey experience preferred.
• Experience in community organizing, creating volunteer programs, and education and outreach preferred.
