Marine Field Operations Manager for the CCMI Little Cayman Research Centre

SUMMARY: The Field Operations Manager is responsible for the effective day to day operations of the Little Cayman Research Centre (LCRC) of the Central Caribbean Marine Institute (CCMI). The successful candidate will manage the physical facilities, personnel, budgets, and will provide support for diverse research and educational programmes. The incumbent will provide the technical oversight to maintain the highest level of field operations for the laboratories, dive and boat operations, solar, composting, water catchment system, and scientific equipment including the CCMI/NOAA-ICON pylon based at Little Cayman. This position requires a diverse individual who can maintain excellent community, local and international government, sponsor, and board relations. He/she will provide the needed field support for leading marine scientists and universities. CCMI aims to maintain the highest level of field operations consistent with our objective to become a premiere Caribbean marine research, conservation, and education centre. CCMI is an international, independent non-government organization with U.S., UK. and Cayman Islands status. The Field Operations Managers reports directly to the Executive Board.

RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Manage and hire as needed seasonal, part-time and full-time staff
  • Provide oversight and support for the educational and scientific groups
  • Develop and implement an annual maintenance plan for the facility and grounds, keeping boats, vehicles, and dive equipment in excellent repair
  • Maintain the highest level of safety standards for all in-water activities including boat and dive operations
  • Maintain the CCMI- NOAA-ICON pylon, instrumentation, and computer archive assuring that instruments are calibrated and cleaned according to schedule
  • Develop and manage the field station and programme budgets
  • Schedule facilities, vehicles and equipment for visiting groups
  • Develop and implement a plan to attract new projects and programmes,
  • Work with Management to develop new grant funding for the research station
  • Oversee our internship programme which provides support for research, education, and operations
  • Provide visiting groups with budgets, letters of support, and help with permitting
  • Maintain agreements with partner institutions
  • Maintain our island outreach program which communicates activities and important developments made by scientists working at the research station
  • Develop and nurture relationships with the local Cayman Islands Governmental and other non-Governmental partners
  • Provide activity updates as needed for press releases, website, newsletter, and sponsor reports
  • Liaise with our active board and advisors participating in monthly and quarterly meetings and executive activities

QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum qualifications include:

  • Bachelor's degree and 5 or more years post-graduate experience in marine operations management at a remote field site or similar experience.
  • Diver certified (minimum Instructor or Divemaster certification), extensive boat handling experience, and good working understanding of scientific research operations.
  • Ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and maintain all systems at a remote field site, including boats, vehicle, dive compressor, solar, and other off-the-grid systems.
  • Ability to manage budgets, work on several projects simultaneously and to manage priorities accordingly.
  • Experience coordinating efforts and establishing excellent working relationships in a small community, with Government agencies, and with Board members.
  • Background in marine science, coral reef ecosystems, environmental education, and/or conservation.
