Position: Lab Assistant III
Percent time: 100%
Duration: full-time temporary
Open: Openings starting in May
Pay rate: $2498/mo
Assignment location: Carlsbad, California
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, works as part of a team conducting biological and geophysical surveys of artificial and natural reefs off the coast of southern California using SCUBA. SCUBA surveys include monitoring the abundance, size, and reproductive
condition of common kelp forest algae, invertebrates, and fish. Surveys also include monitoring the rate of substrate sedimentation and burial. Responsible for the daily preparation of dive and sampling gear for use in the field. Processes, sorts, and classifies invertebrate and algae samples collected from the fields. Assists in data entry and quality assurance / quality control procedures. Performs assorted errands as needed.
MARINE FIELD ASSIGNMENT
- Conducts biological and geophysical surveys of artificial and natural reefs off southern California using SCUBA
- Prepares diving and sampling gear for use in the field, and maintains them in proper working order
- Reports any problems with the operating condition of research vessels and vehicles to his/her supervisor
- Performs assorted errands as needed
LABORATORY ASSIGNMENT
- Enters data
- Processes and sorts biological samples collected from the field
- Uses taxonomic keys to identify unknown samples collected in the field
- Performs assorted errands as needed
REQUIREMENTS
- Must be AAUS research diving certified
- Must be NITROX certified
